As we’re currently running the Underhells campaign, I bought myself a set of hive scum and malstrain genestealers to use as roaming horrors. As I wasn’t planning to run them as my gang, I needed a quick but good looking recipe to paint them. I found a video from Wellywood Wargaming on Youtube which I basically copied, so all cred to him!
Colors I used:
- Priming:
- Paints:
First I primed it in Chaos Black, then Wraithbone. I applied the Wraithbone in several layers so that I got a good coverage. Then I applied the Citadel Seraphim Sepia shade on the whole model.
I then applied the wash with Citadel Carroburg Crimson, roughly 1/10 shade vs. water or contrast medium. You can test on a smaller part of the model first just to check the ratio.
When the purple wash has dried, I edge highlighted the whole model with Citadel Wraithbone. This is definitely the most time consuming step, but I used quite chunky highlights with thinned down paint, so it did not took me that long to do and looked alright.
I was a bit “in the zone”, so I forget to take photos for every step. But in the above image, you can see that I painted the spikes and carapace in Citadel Contrast Gore Grunta Fur (the lighter brown at his lower back) and then proceeded with painting the same with Citadel Contrast Wyldwood, this time a little bit less part of the surface so that I would get a fade to the darker wyldwood brown. After that, I painted the top of the spikes, eyes and the tongue in Citadel Contrast Black Templar. Lastly, I gave the stomach a wash with AK Streaking Grime. Final result:
